McCarthy, Sutton & Byrne

Folk Music from both sides of the Atlantic

McCarthy, Sutton & Byrne unites three acclaimed musicians whose roots lie on opposite shores of

the Atlantic Ocean, yet whose music finds a natural meeting place in the traditions of Ireland and

Newfoundland.

The trio features Benny McCarthy (button accordion, founding member of the iconic Irish band

Danú), Billy Sutton(fiddle, mandolin & vocals, a versatile performer from St. John’s,

Newfoundland, known for his work with The Fables and a member of Danú since 2020), and Tony

Byrne (guitar & vocals, one of Ireland’s most in-demand accompanists and long-time guitarist with

Danú).

Together they chart a course through the rich folk traditions of both sides of the ocean, weaving

reels, jigs, songs, and ballads into a sound that is fresh, dynamic, and deeply rooted. Their repertoire

draws from Ireland’s deep well of traditional music, Newfoundland’s vibrant folk culture, and

beyond, while their collective experience as touring artists lends a cosmopolitan edge.

The Atlantic has long carried music, stories, and people back and forth between Ireland and

Newfoundland, shaping communities and traditions in its wake. McCarthy, Sutton & Byrne

continue that exchange — honouring the roots of the music while steering it into new waters with

imagination, virtuosity, and warmth.

Audiences can expect concerts rich with driving dance tunes, soulful slow airs, and powerful

vocals, all delivered with the chemistry and joy of three seasoned performers who share both a stage

and a deep respect for tradition.
